INDECENT – Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel’s newest work, one of the most acclaimed plays of 2016 when it debuted in New York Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre – will premiere on Broadway this spring, with previews set to begin early April prior to opening April 18 at a Shubert Theatre (to be determined), it has been announced by producers Daryl Roth, Elizabeth Ireland McCann and Cody Lassen, who will present the Vineyard Theatre production in association with La Jolla Playhouse and Yale Repertory Theatre.
A new play with music, INDECENT is written by Paula Vogel, created by Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, and directed by Rebecca Taichman.
INDECENT is a deeply moving play inspired by the true events surrounding the controversial 1923 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch’s GOD OF VENGEANCE — a play seen by some as a seminal work of Jewish culture, and by others as an act of traitorous libel. INDECENT charts the history of an incendiary drama and the path of the artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it.
INDECENT was uniformly praised by critics when it debuted Off-Broadway earlier this year. The New York Times says “INDECENT is a terrific, powerful new play.” “A riveting drama,” wrote Variety. And Deadline called it “A fascinating work…a spellbinding evening.” The production set box office records at the Vineyard Theatre, where it played to sold-out houses throughout its run.
INDECENT marks the Broadway debut of Ms. Vogel, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1998 for her unforgettable play HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, which enjoyed a long, fruitful run Off-Broadway. DRIVE was also the recipient of the NY Drama Critics Circle Award, Lortel, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Obie Awards for Best Play. Ms. Vogel’s numerous works – which have been widely produced in the U.S. and around the world – include BALTIMORE WALTZ, THE LONG CHRISTMAS RIDE HOME, A CIVIL WAR CHRISTMAS and AND BABY MAKES SEVEN.
INDECENT also marks the reunion of the successful producing duo of Daryl Roth and Elizabeth McCann, who together produced an impressive run of critically-acclaimed works by Edward Albee: the Pulitzer Prize-winning THREE TALL WOMEN (1994) Off-Broadway and on national tour; the Tony Award-winning THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA? In 2002. They mounted the renowned revival of WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? starring Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin in 2005, and previously THE PLAY ABOUT THE BABY and BECKETT/ALBEE, both starring Brian Murray and the late Marian Seldes.
INDECENT has choreography by David Dorfman; Aaron Halva and Lisa Gutkin are music directors and co-composers; Riccardo Hernandez is scenic design; costume design is by Emily Rebholz; lighting design is by Chris Akerlind; sound design is by Matt Hubbs and projection design is by Tal Yarden.
Rebecca Taichman has directed the world premieres of Sara Ruhl’s plays STAGE KISS and THE OLDEST BOY, and will direct Ms. Ruhl’s newest work HOW TO TRANSCEND A HAPPY MARRIAGE this spring at Lincoln Center Theater. Other recent productions of note include FAMILIAR by Danai Gurira and MILK LIKE SUGAR by Kristen Greenidge.
